What Dogecoin actually is

Dogecoin was created in 2013 as a joke, and that is not an insult, it is the origin story. Two software engineers, Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, bolted the internet's favourite dog meme onto a copy of bitcoin's code to poke fun at how seriously crypto took itself. It took an afternoon of work. The punchline is that the joke has now outlived thousands of the serious projects it was mocking, and at its peak was worth more than most FTSE 100 companies.

Under the fur it really is a bitcoin relative with the dials turned: blocks arrive every minute instead of every ten, fees are small, and mining it is welded onto mining Litecoin, so the same work secures both. The dial that matters most, though, turns the other way. Bitcoin stops at 21 million coins. Dogecoin never stops: ten thousand new DOGE are minted every minute, forever, about five billion a year. Scarcity is the entire pitch of bitcoin; Dogecoin was deliberately built without it, and most people holding it were never told.

What keeps it alive is culture, not code. Dogecoin has one of the friendliest communities in crypto, a history of funding silly and sweet things (a NASCAR car, the Jamaican bobsleigh team's trip to the Winter Olympics), and one very famous fan whose posts have repeatedly moved the price by double digits in an hour. That is the honest description of the asset: cheap to use, warmly held, and priced almost entirely by attention. Attention is real, but it is the most perishable thing markets trade.

Dogecoin in the UK

Buying it

Every mainstream FCA-registered exchange in the UK lists DOGE, which says something about how thoroughly the joke went respectable. The process is the same as any coin: verified account, pounds in, coins out. The registration covers money-laundering checks only. Nothing about being listed on a regulated-adjacent platform makes a meme coin less of a meme coin, a point regulators have made with increasing volume.

Protection, or the lack of it

None, and worth an extra beat here: no FSCS cover applies to any crypto, and DOGE's price is more purely sentiment-driven than nearly anything else this site tracks, so the thing that is not protected is also unusually capable of halving on a mood swing. £85,000 of protection exists for bank deposits. Zero exists for Dogecoin. Hold it, if you hold it, in pocket-money amounts, because that is the design intent anyway.

Tax, including what spending it means

HMRC treats DOGE as an asset like any other crypto: gains above the annual allowance (£3,000 in recent tax years) are taxable when you sell or swap. The wrinkle for a coin people actually spend and tip with: every spend is a disposal. Buy something with DOGE that has risen since you got it and you have technically crystallised a taxable gain in the act of paying. Tipping someone a few coins is trivial in practice, but the rule exists, and heavy users should keep records. Check HMRC's current guidance.

UK figures last checked August 2026. Tax allowances and protection limits change; check the linked HMRC and FSCS guidance for the current position.

Nothing on this page is financial advice. Crypto is high risk: prices can go to zero, and if something goes wrong you are unlikely to be protected.

Common questions

Is Dogecoin really unlimited?

Yes. About ten thousand new DOGE are created every minute with no end date, roughly five billion a year on top of the 140-odd billion that exist. The yearly addition shrinks as a percentage of the pile, so inflation falls over time, but there is no cap and never has been. It is the single most important difference between DOGE and bitcoin, and the one least mentioned by people promoting it.

Who created it, and are they rich?

Billy Markus and Jackson Palmer, in 2013, as satire. Neither kept a meaningful fortune from it: Markus has said he sold his coins years before the mania for roughly the price of a used car, and Palmer left crypto entirely and became one of its sharpest critics. The coin that made others rich made its creators a cautionary tale about timing, which is somehow the most Dogecoin fact of all.

Why does Elon Musk move the price?

Because attention is the asset's fuel and he holds the world's largest attention hose. His tweets, his hosting of an American comedy show in 2021, and rumours about his companies accepting DOGE have each produced double-digit price swings within hours. No filing, no product, no earnings: a post. Whatever you think of that, it is the honest mechanics of this market, and it cuts identically in both directions.

What can I actually buy with it?

A rotating cast of merchants accept it, from some of Musk's company merchandise to various online retailers and tipping services, and payment processors will convert it for shops that do not want to touch it directly. It is genuinely cheap and quick to send. Honest context: the overwhelming majority of DOGE activity is trading, not shopping, and always has been.

How is Dogecoin mined?

Alongside Litecoin, through a design called merged mining: since 2014 the two share the same mining work, so machines securing Litecoin secure Dogecoin at no extra cost. This bolted a serious security budget onto what began as a joke and is a big part of why it has never suffered a takeover attack despite its value. It also means Dogecoin's security is, in practice, a passenger on Litecoin's.

Is Dogecoin technology any good?

It is fine, in the way a reliable old hatchback is fine. It moves value cheaply, confirms quickly, and has run for over a decade without a serious failure, which beats many far grander projects. Development is modest and slow, mostly maintenance by volunteers. Nobody chooses DOGE for the technology; it works well enough that the technology does not stop them either.

How is DOGE different from bitcoin?

The code is family; the philosophy is opposite. Bitcoin is engineered scarcity aimed at being taken maximally seriously: capped supply, ten-minute blocks, institutional custody. Dogecoin is uncapped, minute-by-minute, and constitutionally refuses to be serious. Bitcoin's bet is that discipline creates value; Dogecoin's observed reality is that community and celebrity can too, for as long as they last.

Do I have to buy a whole DOGE?

A whole DOGE costs pennies, so no one has ever needed to ask. It divides into a hundred million units each regardless. The relevant discipline with DOGE is not the unit, it is the total: decide what you are comfortable seeing evaporate in a bad week, because weeks like that are a recurring feature of its history.

Is my DOGE protected in the UK if an exchange fails?

No. The £85,000 FSCS protection is for bank deposits and does not cover crypto anywhere. An exchange failure leaves you an unsecured creditor holding a claim, not coins. For an asset this volatile, held mostly in small amounts, the practical advice writes itself: treat it like cash in a fairground wallet, an amount whose loss would annoy rather than hurt.

What should I actually watch with Dogecoin?

Attention, honestly measured: social volume, celebrity involvement, and whether payment integrations are real or rumoured, because rumours have moved this coin more than releases. Watch the inflation arithmetic too when comparing any price to its past: five billion new coins a year means the same market value buys a lower price per coin every year. And treat every DOGE price prediction as entertainment, which is at least in the spirit of the thing.
